From April 28–30, 2023, the lush forests of Aïn Draham, Tunisia, welcomed a groundbreaking event: TRAI’ELLE, a women-only trail run blending sport, nature, and environmental advocacy. Organized by Dar El Ain, this inaugural edition brought together women from all walks of life—farmers, entrepreneurs, artists, and activists—to run through the Kroumirie forests while raising awareness for environmental protection.
More Than a Race: A Tribute to Women and Nature
TRAI’ELLE wasn’t just about competition; it celebrated the profound bond between women and the environment. With the rallying cry “Run for Nature,” participants traversed a 10-kilometer route through rich ecosystems and mountain villages, pausing at temporary eco-villages for workshops on climate change, waste management, and local biodiversity.
Hands-On Impact: Workshops and Community Action
Over three days, interactive workshops and clean-up drives engaged both runners and local communities. In Douar El Mrij, teams collected and repurposed plastic waste, while Bni’Mtir hosted a gender-focused climate action workshop, empowering future generations to tackle environmental challenges.
A Movement Backed by Global Allies
Supported by WWF and RestartMed, TRAI’ELLE aims to grow into an annual platform for eco-conscious women. “Mother Nature is our sanctuary, and protecting her is a shared duty,” says Rania Mechergui, a Dar El Ain organizer. The event highlights the urgency of preserving ecosystems under threat from climate change and water scarcity.
